LRT.LT: Paliesius Manor Concerts. Jazz Night at Paliesius: Vladimir Tarasov (percussion, Lithuania)

Vladimir Tarasov is a world-renowned drummer, inventive percussionist, composer, and visual artist. He commands a multitude of musical styles, but his primary passions are free jazz and improvisational music. Touched by this masterful percussionist, instruments resonate like an entire orchestra; he even coaxes music from unexpected objects. Alongside the GTČ trio, V. Tarasov laid the foundations for the Lithuanian jazz school, performed with global luminaries of improvisational music, and was among the first in Europe to present solo percussion programs. A conceptual artist, he is actively engaged in a broad spectrum of creative life: composing for theater and cinema, creating visual art and cross-genre projects, staging performances and installations, and collaborating with creators across various artistic disciplines—writers, painters, and masters of dance and movement.

That Vilnius was to us like an eye,

That it shone

For Lithuania, our homeland. – Jonas Maironis

A Walk Among the Sounds of Vilnius

It is a joy to walk through Vilnius. Here, in our city, people of diverse nationalities and religions live side by side. A magnificent ensemble of different national cultures has been resounding in Vilnius for 700 years. As you stroll the old city streets and pass churches of different confessions, you hear Time and the history of each one. You pass the courtyard where the Great Synagogue of Vilna once stood, and the house where the great philosopher, Rabbi Gaon, lived.

You will see many beautiful, ancient churches looking exactly as they did from the very beginning—yet so little remains of the Great Synagogue. And still, the sounds of its history resonate…

Percussion is perhaps the best medium to convey this—because percussion instruments are ancient. They emerged long before melodic instruments. And, unlike them, they do not merely illustrate, but rather convey something profound that cannot be captured in sheet music…” – Vladimir Tarasov.
