“Along the Paths of Living History” – An Educational Hike Through World War I Fortifications
Description
On April 19, we invite you on an extraordinary historical hike to discover the traces of the First World War hidden close by.
Although over 100 years have passed since the end of the First World War (1914–1918) and this chapter of history has faded into oblivion, the fortifications remembering that era remain as elements of the landscape. They catch the eye, compelling our thoughts to return to the events and painful experiences of the past.
On both sides of the Adutiškis–Vidžiai road (Didžiasalis eldership), along a stretch of approximately 50 km (part of which lies in the territory of Belarus), more than 50 German military structures of various purposes have survived: residential buildings, artillery and garrison bunkers, shelters, warehouses, and dugouts. The sites can be reached by car or on foot.
This hike is an opportunity to touch living history, to feel the spirit of a bygone era, and to learn the hidden secrets of our region from the hike’s guide.
Hike route (by car, approx. 15 km): Paliesius Manor – Jakeliai village – towards the first front line (Medinai front center).
Hike route (on foot, approx. 8 km): hiking along the winding Kamaja River towards the active front line. We will not reveal the entire route—let it remain a secret for you to discover as we journey together…
