More about the concert

On September 25, the music of Hugo Kauder will resonate through Paliesius Manor—a composer in whose work the Viennese musical tradition, the historical fractures of the 20th century, and a devotion to early music all converge. During the concert, US artists Karen Bentley Pollick and Daniel Glover will present Kauder’s chamber works, revealing the composer’s ability to bind traditional musical language to an individual, distinctive sound.

Hugo Kauder was born in Austria, in the town of Tobitschau (present-day Tovačov, Czechia), and moved to Vienna in 1905. Initially studying engineering, he soon began to delve into early music. From 1907 to 1911, Kauder played in the Vienna Tonkünstler Orchestra—first on the violin, then the viola. He was not only a prolific composer but also an active musician: he wrote more than 200 works, including five symphonies, nineteen string quartets, numerous vocal pieces, and the opera „Merlin“, as well as works on music theory.

Kauder’s life is closely tied to the dramatic history of 20th-century Europe. After Nazi Germany annexed Austria, the composer fled to the Netherlands, then to Great Britain, and in 1940 arrived in New York, where he taught composition and music theory, wrote music criticism, and continued to compose. In 1928, he was awarded the City of Vienna Prize for Art, and his early works were published by Universal Edition, one of Europe’s most important publishing houses. Today, his music is increasingly returning to concert halls and recording studios, offering an opportunity to rediscover a composer whose creative path encompassed Viennese modernism, forced emigration, and a new life in America.

At Paliesius Manor, Kauder’s sonatas for violin, viola, and piano will be performed. These works invite the listener into a dialogue of different timbres: the clear and expressive sound of the violin, the richer voice of the viola, alongside the harmony and rhythm created by the piano. In chamber music, each instrument becomes an equal participant in the conversation, making not only virtuosic technique essential, but also the ability to listen, react, and unfold a shared musical thought.

The performers also share a special, personal connection to this program. In 2025, Karen and Daniel recorded Kauder’s sonatas for violin and viola at Skywalker Ranch studio, meaning the music heard at Paliesius Manor is not simply a rediscovered repertoire, but a continuation of the artists’ ongoing journey with Kauder’s work.

Karen Bentley Pollick is an American performer who concertizes on the violin, viola, and piano, whose repertoire encompasses baroque and contemporary music, as well as jazz and the avant-garde. She has recorded works with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine, the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, and other ensembles. Her discography features five albums on the Toccata Classics label, which have earned eleven Global Music Awards. Among her latest projects: recordings of concertos by Caucasian composers with the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, as well as Kauder’s chamber music.

Daniel Glover is a pianist who has performed in 42 US states and 28 countries across Europe, Asia, South America, and the Caribbean. He studied under such pedagogues as Eugene List, Abbey Simon, and Jerome Lowenthal, and earned his master’s degree at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York, where he studied on a scholarship. Glover’s repertoire includes over 80 concertos for piano and orchestra; he is a frequent orchestral soloist and has premiered numerous works worldwide.

At Paliesius Manor, two artists will meet whose creative endeavors constantly gravitate toward lesser-known repertoire, new discoveries, and a dialogue between different musical eras. Hugo Kauder’s sonatas will offer an opportunity to hear the echoes of the Viennese musical tradition not in a museum-like setting, but in a living chamber space interpreted by today’s performers, where every detail radiates.
